A roadmap matches short-term and long-term goals to specific technology solutions. Exploring roadmaps for complex high-tech embedded systems often results in identifying interdependent system changes and mutually exclusive options.

Improvement options invariably have significant interdependence, particularly for system performance. This makes it difficult for decision makers to select the best mix of performance gain options to meet an improvement target.

Performance roadmap decision trees provide a simple and easy-to-understand visualisation of improvement options and their dependencies. Decision makers can recognise mutually exclusive options, and gain direct insight into the trade-off between development effort and performance impact.

  1. Analyse performance options, effort impact and list interdependencies
  2. Construct the performance roadmap decision tree
    a)  Per node, choose a feasible option;
         construct links for the option’s selection
         or rejection; tag options with a smiley
         (☺ or ☹ )
    b)  Indicate performance gain at each node,
         e.g. in (micro) seconds
    c)  Repeat recursively until all options have
         been explored
    d)  Mark preferred roadmap paths (optional)
